Seasons of the Sun:
A Sample Game with Paper and Pencil
In the start all 22 squares (two circles with eleven sectors)
of the game board are empty.
Here, the two players are called "Border" and "Central".
Player Border has to fill the eleven squares of the outer circle,
and player Central has to fill the squares of the inner circle.
In the notion below each move is given by two or three lines of text.
The first line contains the number of the move, the player to move,
the eyes he has rolled with the dice, the dice he rolled again,
and the final outcome of all three dice. In the second line it is
written in which sector the player has entered the outcome and what
the consequence was. Only sometimes there is a third line. This
contains the new interims score, but only when the score has just
changed.
Sometimes I have included a picture and a comment between two moves.
Player Border has the first move.
1. Border:
1,4,5 ---> the 1 again ---> 2,4,5
Value 11 to sector Max-5
2. Central:
1,2,3 ---> no wish for second roll
Value 6 to sector min-11
3. Border:
1,4,6 ---> 1 again ---> 6,4,6
Value 16 to Max-13
4. Central:
1,2,3 ---> no second roll
Value 6 to min-10
5. Border:
2,4,6 ---> 2 again ---> 2,4,6
Value 12 to Max-8
6. Central:
4,4,5 ---> no second roll
Value 13 to Max-8 ---> Sector won!
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 0-8
Comment: Now the order of turn is changing,
because player Central has won a sector.
Central has to move again.
7. Central:
1,2,2 ---> no second roll
Value 5 to min-13
8. Border:
1,4,6 ---> 1 again ---> 3,4,6
Value 13 to Max-9
9. Central:
2,5,5 ---> 2 again ---> 6,5,5
Value 16 to Max-13 ---> Sector Max-13 neutralised.
The numbers in sector Max-13 are deleted. Both squares
of the sector are free again.
10. Border:
5,5,6 ---> no second roll
Value 16 to Max-13
11. Central:
2,2,3 ---> no second roll
Value 7 to min-9
Comment:
Central has a small lead (by 8-0).
Central has filled already four of his five squares in the
min area, whereas Border has played almost only into the
Max area.
12. Border:
1,3,6 ---> 6 again ---> 1,3,3
Value 7 to min-9 ---> Sector neutralised:
the entries in sector min-9 are deleted.
13. Central:
2,3,4 ---> 2 and 3 again ---> 5,6,4
Value 15 to Max-9 ---> Sector won.
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 0-17
14. Central:
2,5,6 ---> 2 again ---> 1,5,6
Value 12 to Max-5 ---> Sector won.
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 0-22
15. Central:
3,4,6 ---> 3 again ---> 4,4,6
Value 14 to Max-10
Comment:
Central has a lead in points. But, because of the
sectors won he had to make already three extra moves.
So, in his circle already more squares are occupied.
This again will help the opponent to find "better" places
for his numbers.
16. Border:
3,4,6 ---> 3 again ---> 2,4,6
Value 12 to min-10 ---> Sector min-10 lost.
(Border preferred to resign the "difficult" Sector min-10
instead of the easier to get Max-11-Sector, where
the opponent has a 14.)
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 0-32
17. Central:
1,1,6 ---> 6 again ---> 1,1,6
Value 8 to min-9
18. Border:
1,4,5 ---> 4 and 5 again ---> 1,2,3
Value 6 to min-9 ---> Sector won!
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 9-32
19. Border:
4,6,6 ---> no second roll
Value 16 to Max-10 ---> Sector won
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 19-32
20. Border:
1,2,4 ---> no second roll
Value 7 to min-17
Comment: Currently, Border is 13 points down. So, he is going
full risk now. His hope is to get the 17 points of min-17
with his 7, because player Central has no other free squares
left in his min area.
21. Central:
1,4,6 ---> 1 again ---> 6,4,6
Value 16 to Max-15
Comment: Central is in the lead. He wants to bring
the match to a quick positive end. Therefore he avoids
neutralisation of sector Max-13.
22. Border:
1,2,6 ---> 6 again ---> 1,2,2
Value 5 to min-11 ---> Sector won
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 30-32
23. Border:
2,2,4 ---> 4 again ---> 2,2,5
Value 9 to min-13 ---> Sector lost
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 30-45
24. Central:
3,3,4 ---> one 3 and the 4 again ---> 3,5,6
Value 14 to Max-13 ---> Sector lost
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 43-45
25. Border:
2,5,6 ---> 2 again ---> 5,5,6
Value 16 to Max-15 ---> Sector neutralised
26. Central:
3,5,6 ---> 3 again ---> 4,5,6
Value 15 to Max-15
27. Border:
2,4,5 ---> 2 and 4 again ---> 2,3,5
Value 10 to Max-15 ---> Sector lost
Interims Score (Border vs Central): 43-60
Comment: When Central rolls less than 7 eyes now, he gets
sector min-17 and becomes a clear winner. In case of 8 or more
eyes the match ends in a 60-60 draw. A "7" would neutralise min-17,
and the sector would be played out again.
28. Central:
2,2,5 ---> 5 again ---> 2,2,1
Value 5 to min-17 ---> Sector won
The game is finished. Player Central has won with 77 - 43
points.
Who wants to play "Seasons of the Sun" by himself with
pencil and paper, simply needs three normal dice, a pencil,
and an outprint of the first photo of this site. Have sun ...
ahemm fun!
